Project Overview
Objective: Identifying a problem in the medical industry and building a solution
Project Information: End-to-end design, Mobile Application (iOS)
My Role: Lead UX/UI Designer - User Research, UX/UI Design, Prototyping, Usability Testing
Duration: 2-week sprint - October 2021
Impact: An end-to-end design and conceptual application that would act as a centralized resource for complementary & alternative medicine recommendations and education.
Tools Used: Figma, Miro, Trello, Google Survey, Zoom, Slack
Problem
Health-conscious people currently find their CAM resources through word of mouth from friends and family. There isn't a comprehensive, reliable platform that connects users to trustworthy CAM literature or licensed CAM professionals.
How might we help health-conscious people find credible sources of information to assist them in finding trustworthy CAM literature or licensed CAM professionals?

-
Dance Movement, Music Therapy, Massage, Osteopathy, Biofeedback

-
Aromatherapy, Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Acupressure, Herbal Medicine, Homeopathy, Naturopathy

Research Objectives
-
Discover prior experiences and thought processes behind why people choose an alternative or complementary medical treatment practice.

-
Uncover the methods people use when choosing a source of complementary or alternative medicine, and what motivates their decisions.

-
Understand the qualities users value in their CAM professional and what contributes to a good doctor-patient relationship.
Key User Insights
We found that people value being seen, heard, and sincerely cared for when consulting a medical professional.

"If I feel rushed by my doctor, I don't feel attended to"

Survey Data
Our Google Survey allowed us to collect and analyze enough numerical data to find useful patterns and generalize our results to a wider population.
100%
were referred to CAM specialists by a friend or family member.
60%
considered their CAM treatments very helpful.
50%
relied on CAM specialists for long-term health conditions.

Meet Elyse!
Our user persona is the combination of needs, frustrations, goals, and personality traits gathered during user interviews. We compiled our user insights into an Affinity Diagram and consolidated them into an Empathy Map. Then, at long last, Elyse Anthony emerged!

Our Main Takeaways:
-
Allow users to research alternative medicines to increase the possibility of discovering new treatment methods.

-
Because alternative treatment practices can be costly, we wanted to allow users to book group sessions to lower therapy treatment costs.

-
Practioner bios contain user reviews, testimonials, and links to their website, so users better understand if they're a good match.

-
Establish a paid premium subscription for users to access a greater scope of complementary health resources and drive business revenue.
Prototype & Testing
Lo-Fi Testing

We pivoted from allowing users to book appointments for the following reasons:
-
We need real-time access to practitioners' schedules, calendars, insurance policies, and pricing structures.

-
Where is our funding coming from? Do licensed practitioners pay us to advertise their services, do users pay for premium subscriptions, or do we generate revenue from sponsors?

-
Our Competitive Analysis revealed that CAM sites depend on sponsors for funding rather than generating revenue as a paid subscription service for licensed professionals.
Mid-Fi Testing
Key Iterations:
-
Offer CAM suggestions based on questionnaire results to interpret user preferences and provide an actionable treatment plan.

-
Display questionnaire results on the user profile so suggested remedies are not lost.

-
Allow users to resubmit the questionnaire in case their health goals change.
Hi-Fi Testing

Try the Prototype!

I worked with two designers on the project and took on the challenge of being the team lead. The experience was enjoyable and educational. As the lead, I learned the importance of facilitating collaboration and communication in a successful design team.
